You can manufacture it to be hard like wood spongy like upholstery. Preparation and application procedure if you re coating fresh paint allow the paint to cure first. For those individuals who don t know specifically what polyurethane is it s a synthetic product that works in the same way as paint rubber metal wood and other materials do. You can apply polyurethane over any type of paint as long as it s clean and has been properly prepared.

Start by cleaning the surface and filling in any cracks or imperfections. I needed to just put a clear water based polyurethane over the paint. Curing times vary according to paint type and atmospheric conditions but a safe average is about a week. It s durable flexible and resilient.

However oil based polyurethane tends to yellow as it ages whereas water based varieties stay transparent. Well i much prefer a true satin or matte finish but having gone through this before i knew exactly what i needed to do. It was fine but i wasn t impressed enough with it to use it again. Applying polyurethane over a painted surface will give it an impeccably smooth finish.

Polyurethane is a very useful product with multiple uses. Last time i used rust oleum water based matte polyurethane.
